Hayley Williams on Mental Health: "I Didn't Laugh For a Long Time"

Lifted off Paramore's latest album After Laughter, the band's current single "Rose-Colored Boy" speaks to the social expectation to be happy — a pressure that adds shame to sadness, which lead singer Hayley Williams describes as a "toxic cocktail." In an exclusive op-ed for PAPER, Williams reflects on mental health and a dark moment when life fell from underneath her.
I've put this essay off till the very last possible day. Anytime someone asks me to write something for them my first question is always, "When do you absolutely have to have it by?" It's not that I don't enjoy writing, but these assignments give me such a strange and creeping anxiety. It's happening right this very second, as the words are coming out of my fingers. Sure, I think I'm a pretty good writer, but it's not like I'm Sylvia fucking Plath! What am I freaking out about? People will see it, they might even read it, and if I'm lucky they'll get something from it.
No. If I'm honest, in my head, it's more like this: People will see it, they might even read it, and if they don't get anything from it then maybe it's a reflection of my worth.Let's talk about something else. Let's talk about AL.
In the summer of 2015, I was an engaged, yellow-haired 26-year-old. There was a Grammy sitting on my kitchen counter and boxes everywhere from the move I'd made back home to Nashville after a few weird years in LA. I was going to get married that September, slow down some, plant a garden, have a kid, make another Paramore record. Everything was finally going to be perfect and I was going to live happily ever afte— Oh.
Wow...
Just threw up a little bit.
Imagine a little girl, dancing and twirling on a sidewalk in a loud, colorful dress. Eyes closed, laughing. 100 feet above her, someone's pushing a piano (just go with me, here) out of their apartment window and it's got nowhere to go but straight down. Well, I was the little girl.
Taylor York and I were supposed to start writing for what would be our fifth album and I remember for the first time in a long time, I actually had an idea I wanted to send him. I almost cried when I found the lyrics in my phone the other day:
"Sanity, why must you make a fool of me/ You been a friend to me, now I think we're enemies/ When I fall on my knees I hear you laughing/ When I call on your name, you don't come."
We never finished it, but that little verse was the first hint my subconscious gave me that I wasn't okay. I wouldn't get any others until after the piano fell, right on top of me.
I woke up from that crash with one less bandmate... another fight about money and who wrote what songs. And I had a wedding ring on, despite breaking off the engagement only months before. A lot happened within a short time. But then I didn't eat, I didn't sleep, I didn't laugh... for a long time. I'm still hesitant to call it depression. Mostly out of fear people will put it in a headline, as if depression is unique and interesting and deserves a click. Psychology is interesting. Depression is torment.
We wrote and wrote and I never liked what I put to the music Taylor sent me. His stuff sounded inspired. My parts sounded, to me, like someone dead in the eyes. I didn't know the person behind those words. Probably because I never before allowed her to come out and say how she really felt. I never cared to get to know her. How could the same lips that said, "I do," sing the words, "You want forgiveness but I can't give you that." Or the same person who once tried to be so bubbly write lyrics like, "I don't need no help, I can sabotage me by myself. "
But writing kept me alive. Forced me to be honest. Made me have empathy for Taylor in his struggles with mental health. It helped me understand that emotional wellness and physical health are actually related. It helped me realize that I shouldn't have ever married my ex and that love is not something we can just extract from one other. Writing opened my heart to healing as Zac Farro bolted back into mine and Taylor's daily lives like lightning. Now every night on tour, I turn around and there's my brother back on the drums again. No more denial. No more walking across traffic like the old lady in the cartoon who doesn't even notice the wreckage behind her when she's barely made it to the other side.
This is what I call "Life with AL" — short for After Laughter. It's a little dumb, but it helps me mark this time as a significant turning point in my life. Like a Saturn return. I'm noticing similar movement in my friends' lives too. More presence and awareness. More tenderness. I'm alive to both pain and joy now. I have my old laugh back, as my mom says. The one that takes over my body and sends me out of myself for a few seconds. And only a couple years ago, I had hoped I'd die.
So there's my essay. What a yapping idiot I must seem to people who don't know me from Adam.
Who's Adam? Is he related to AL?
But here's the thing: one hour ago I was afraid to write this for fear it wouldn't be "enough." All I could do was write about something I care about. Expression is survival. You can do it however you please. Write, draw, create something with your hands. Tell somebody you love them. Take a drive, roll down your windows and yell something like, "MY LIFE IS SO SHIT RIGHT NOW!" Or, "WHAT DO YOU KNOW? I'M ACTUALLY FINE TODAY!"
These are just things to try if the crying and dancing doesn't work.
And so you can't say that my essay didn't help a little bit... and then I won't tell myself I'm worthless.

***

i can’t believe she married that dickhead after breaking the engagement!!! like... why? i don’t understand.

i also cannot believe they were planning on having a kid and starting a family and then it all went to shit. poor Hayley. my lovely Hayles, she deserves the very best.

she seemes OK now, but i hope someday she’ll feel like that dancing little girl, but without the piano hovering over her head.

~talk’s a waste of time~

Post apreciativo: Paramore's "After Laughter"

¡dios!
"throw me into the fire/throw me in pull me out again". por dios. en vivo, por dios, qué espectáculo.
"they say that dreaming is free/but i wouldn't care what it cost me", y el bridge. todavía me parten el corazón, son demasiado reales.
"i can't think of getting old it only makes me want to die/i can't think of who i was 'cause it just makes me want to cry". o sea: punto. entre otras frases importantes: "the dream is good if you don't wear it out".

~talk's a waste of time~

so say goodbye and hit the road.

pack it up and disappear.

being blue is better than being over it

you don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you.

i know it's mad but if i go to Hell would come with me or just leave?

just think of the future
and think of your dreams
you'll get away from here
you'll get away eventually

¡Zac!
IGNORANCE IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND! IGNORANCE IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND! ah, qué buen tema.
acto seguido (todavía sin hablar), arrancaron con "Still Into You". saltamos mucho en el estribillo. porque... RE DA.
acá Hayley se hizo un nudito en la remera cuz she's too cool for school (btw: tuve flashbacks del secundario #ElHorror), y empezó "Brick By Boring Brick". not my favourite song of all times, pero es un buen tema para escuchar/cantar/disfrutar en vivo. y Hayley cantando casi al final you'll be better off without me. <3 y bueh: PARA-PA-PA-RA-PA-PA-RA!
"Hello, Argentina! How are you tonight? We missed you a lot. Somos Paramore", dijo la ahora-decolorada antes de arrancar con "That's What You Get". for fucks sake, when are they gonna stop playing this song?! Ya me re hinchó los huevos.
moving on! "I Caught Myself"... tik-tak...

... DELETED!
Hayley: "It's time to dance"
*platillo de Zac*
Hayley: "¡BUENOS AIRES! For all I know-"
y "Told You So" siguió su curso. ¡AH! ¡AH! ¡AAAAAAAAHHHHH! ¡QUÉ BUENA CANCIÓN! ¡PUTA MADRE, FUCKING TAYLOR DEL ORTO, TE AMO! throw me into the fire/throw me in pull me out again.
Hayley: "¡Falsos feliz!" me morí del amor. creo que "Fake Happy" es la mejor canción del universo, y definitivamente una de mis favoritas del CD junto con "Rose-colored Boy", porque: fuck, me siento demasiado entendida con esos dos temas. demasiado. me da un poco de bronca que no toquen el primer verso, porque es como lo más. o sea: i love making you believe/what you get is what you see/but i'm so fake happy/i feel so fake happy/and i bet everybody here/is just as insincere/we're all so fake happy/and i know fake happy. pero, genial, genial, genial, nonetheless.
""Can we get some lights on? Hi!", empezó Hayley poniéndose en cuclillas. "Hello, thank you so much for hanging out with us tonight. This is a lot of fun. It's been a long time since we've gotten to play music with you and we don't take it for granted. [...] Right now, if you wouldn't mind, I would like to raise a toast; put your glass high in the air.", siguió parándose, levantando una copa ficticia en el aire y esperando que hiciéramos lo mismo. "It's been ten years since 2007. That's a decade. And the World was a lot simpler in 2007, and we put out our second album called Riot!. Right now, with you -in Argentina, tonight- I would like to celebrate 10 years of Riot!. So here's to you, Argentina. Here's to us, haging out once again. And here's to misery". LA FORMA EN QUE DIJO "here's to misery", ME PONE LA PIEL DE GALLINA... CADA... VEZ.

Nothing but respect for my president". y tipo, no. estábamos bardeando, Hayley.
después de ese #AcaAwkward moment, Hayley nos dijo que era tiempo de bailar otra vez y tocaron "Ain't It Fun". good stuff.
sabiendo que ya se acercaba el fin, Hayley tiró "Here are some songs from After Laughter", y así nomás tocaron "Caught In The Middle" -otra que strikes too close to home. o sea: i can't think of getting old it only makes me want to die. same, Hayley, same. the dream is good if you don't wear it out. ¿sigo? no i don't need no help/i can sabotage me by myself. y nos dejó cantar encima. basta, Hayley, no me hagas enfrentar mis problemas en público (?). temón.- y eso que tiene una base reggae. datazo.
"Gracias, Argentina, thank you so much!" -aawww. "... and also Brazil" - la cagaste, Hayles. "[...] We are gracias for you. Zac wanted me to tell you. Somos gracias, for you" *giggles* "... de nada", se contesta sola: por qué sos tan adorable. cómo. quiero una Hayley Williams. "... Señor Farro".
"[...] Until next time, Argentina!"
*whispers* "Are you ready?"
*gritos*
"You sure?"
*más gritos*
"Don't let me down."
*mega gritos*
"Argentina! WE-" y nos dejó gritar "-ARE PARAMORE!", y así nomás arrancó "Rose-colored Boy", y asjdfklasjdksajdklasjdklasjdlkasjdlkasjdlksajd. Y acá casi que lloré porque, demasiado. you got me nervous/when you're turning it into a joke/a half-empty girl/don't make laugh i'll- <3 y en el medio Hayles tira: what you gonna do when you get outta jail?/i'm gonna have some fun! ("Genius of Love" -Tom Tom Club). you say 'we gotta look on the bright side'/i say 'well maybe if you wanna go blind'/you say my eyes are getting too dark now/but boy you ain't ever seen my mind -digo, necesito todo un post aparte para explicar lo que significa para mí esta canción. either way: estuvo espectacular. y es un MUY BUEN tema para terminar el show porque te deja re manija mal.

"Told You So" - Paramore (Official Video)

ok. i felt it. goosebumps all over. they still got it. they got it. they always did, but they do now. i... fucking speechless. i loved it. first listen.

i said this before (i think) but, Josh who? TAYLOR FUCKING YORK! Josh couldn't have written this in his wildest dreams. yeah, he brought us great stuff, but Taylor, babe... you're one talented boy.

i kinda felt like the verses and the chorus shouldn't work together at first but they totally do. i love that the song starts acapella. i absolutely ADORE the bridge. the fact that they chose to merge the bridge and the last chorus AAAAAHHHH!!! I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG!

E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

(except that down-pitch on some words. i understand where it's coming from, conceptually, but i hate it when musicians put effects on the voice when the singer has an incredible voice to begin with. i have issues, there's nothing else to it. it's personal.)

love Hayley's little dance in the car. loved the use of light, loved the aesthetics of the video (thank you very much, Mr. Zac Farro). aaaahhhh aslkdjalskdjalksjdlkajsdlkajsdklasjd !!! YEEEESSSS! I CANNOT WAIT TO HEAR THIS ALBUM!

I

CAN'T

WAIT

look at that beautiful boy:

fuck everything else: i need "After Laughter". i need it NOW.

P.S.: i hate change mainly because i have a tough time dealing with it, but i am so super on board with this new sound.

Paramore - "Hard Times" (Official Music Video)

ok, so... i don't know where this new sound is coming from of where is gonna lead us, but... i mean: how cute is Hayles?

i love her. she's adorable.

i keep listening to the song over and over because i want to like it so desesperately. it's just SO weird. kind of in a good way. but at the same time i feel like if it wasn't because i recognize Hayley's voice a mile away i don't feel it sounds like Paramore.

to me. it doesn't sound like Paramore to me. yet, at least; i don't know! i can't keep up with these kids changing their sound so radically from album to album. well, actually since Josh left... ugh! i hate saying that, i don't miss that fucker, he broke my baby girl's heart and took down Zac with him.

i was getting used to the self-titled sound and now this! i'm not trying to be bitchy, i just wanna listen to a new Paramore song and feel the same way i did when i first listened to "Misery Business" or "Ignorance", even "Now" in all its weirdness gave me goosebumps the first time i listened to it. i wanna feel that thrill, that excitement. honestly, "Hard Times" is not doing that for me right now. it's a good song, i know. i just don't like it that much. i'm not gonna say i love it just because i love the band. and i get that they grew up and change is good and all that, but it's just not doing it for me anymore, and that's kinda sad :(

we got Zac back though! that's good news (:

and Taylor is adorable as ever <3

i loved the video, it's very Bowie. i really like that.

#1 había una sola fila para todo: incluyendo campo, campo vip (pff! qué engaña pichanga esto del campo vip), platea de pie y preferencial, que, oh, casualidad: hello, también es de pie. no sé qué quisieron decir con eso de "platea de pie", era la misma mierda, pero una estaba más lejos. en fin;
#2 estábamos haciendo fila en la calle y... la calle no estaba cerrada. lo peor fue que entrábamos cómodamente en la vereda. de hecho, logré convencer a la mayoría de las personas que estaban detrás mío, y algunas más adelante (los llamé de mil maneras diferentes, pero me dieron bola cuando dije: "ey! niños haciendo fila para el recital de Paramore!", ahí se dieron vuelta todos), que lo conveninete era hacer fila en la vereda, pero los pendejos highschooleros del culo de adelante no se quisieron mover. así que se andaban corriendo cada vez que pasaba un auto. nota de color: la calle es doble mano. síp. fue entretenido de ver.
¡ABURRIDO!
después vino "The Only Exception". i really, really hate this song, so i ain't talking 'bout it. period. people seem to love it, though. i must be just weird.
moving on! (he, see what i just did there?)
empezó "Let The Flames Begin". otra canción que gritamos a lo loco, más que nada, porque a todo el mundo le gusta y back in 2011, no la tocaron. terminó el tema tradicional y yo estaba: "tienen que tocar el outro, tienen que tocar el outro". y efectivamente tocaron el outro. y la gritamos como enfermos mentales parawhores que somsos: father oh father oh father o father/father well i am ready won't you let it begin/'cause i am here now i want to dance in/the mighty palm of your hand. askldjalksjdlkasjdljas!!! genial. ♥

"Conquistador" - 30 Seconds To Mars (Official Lyric Video)

ok. now we're talking 30 Seconds To Mars. see? it's ok to have ONE song with electronic shit like "Up In The Air", Paramore, but not the WHOLE freaking album. agh! i hate "Paramore" ¬¬
anywho: this album is really promising. also, you can't make electronic shit work when you don't have a sick voice. no offense. but, 30 Seconds To Mars and Fall Out Boy can pull out whatever shit they want with the music cuz Jared and Patrick have some sick voices going on, they can do whatever they want. and on top of all, i think both bands have a sense of what music should sound like that is just the right one. i mean: do you hear those violins at the end of this song? that's how it's done! listen and learn, kids. listen... and... learn.
i'm loving this song. heard it ten times in a row already... going for the eleventh.

"Still Into You" - Paramore (Official Music Video)

they don't look like a band in this video. they look like three best friends having fun, shooting their own version of  a music video from some other band; and then they uploaded it to youtube.
i hate the pastel colors, but that's just me.
