… who didn’t like “Trench”?
like, at all? and by that, i don’t mean it’s bad, because it’s good, OBVIOUSLY. it’s really good, actually. i just mean that i (PERSONALLY, ME) didn’t like it.
the songs are too predictable. it all sounds pretty much the same (except for “Jumpsuit”, “Levitate”, “Neon Gravestones”, “Nico And The Niners”, and “Leave The City”). it’s sad. it’s like, 80’s beat. soft verses. chorus filled with falcetos. that’s it. that’s the album.
what i’m trying to get at is: i used to struggle when trying to explain to people what tøp sounded like, because the other albums are so diverse. with “Trench” though, i could just say it’s kinda like Bruno Mars? like, you know? 80’s pop? and that would be describing over 70% of the album.
maybe i’m also kinda annoyed (borderline furious) by the fact that they sold “Trench” as a concept album, teasing and “explaining” for MONTHS- i mean, this dma.org mumbo jumbo started in MARCH- only to explain 3/14 songs? THREE out of FOURTEEN! like, only “Morph”, “Nico And The Niners”, and “Leave The City” happen in this universe. the rest of the songs might as well be a whole different album. even “Jumpsuit” and “Levitate”, that have music videos within this universe, the lyrics don’t seem to fit. i don’t care if it says ‘welcome to Trench’ at the end of “Levitate”, it’s not enough to make it a part of it.
i guess i should not surprised i’m disappointed, because the first time i listen to “Levitate” i didn’t like it. and i LOVED “Jumpsuit” and “Nico And The Niners”. i didn’t like “My Blood”, either; and its music video just proves how much the rest of the album has nothing to do with Dema. maybe i went in hopeful because my expectations were low, but i was still disappointed.
i mean, “Smithereens” is such a poor excuse of a love song. “Tear In My Heart” and “We Don’t Believe What’s On TV” are rolling in their graves.
also, “Pet Cheetah” is a joke. like, “TB Saga” level joke. what is even that song? was Tyler high or something?
i respect “Legend” because it’s about his grandfather, actually has some decent lyrics, and i appreciate Tyler bringing back the ukelele (which i didn't hear in any of the other songs, but i only listened to "Trench" once, so don't hold it against me).
“Neon Gravestones”, which is probably my favorite song in the album, and arguably the only actual like REALLY good song in it, fucked me up real good. like it left me crying for more than i would’ve been comfortable with. maybe because i started thinking about Chester Bennington and the idea of Tyler still batteling with taking his own life (which i couldn’t bare. it’d destroy me. i can’t even think about it).
also, where was Josh? ‘cause like, he didn’t shine anywhere? what happened to him? (i won’t take this to my grave though, ‘cause, again: i only listened to “Trench” once and maybe i missed something, so).
i guess overall, my opinion is that maybe they should’ve release “Trench” as an EP, with “Morph”, “Nico And The Niners”, and “Leave The City” (you can throw “Jumpsuit”, “Bandito” and “Levitate” in there if it makes you happy), like in… April? then a full-length album with the rest of the songs. and that would’ve been fine.
but this? i didn’t like this. like, i feel used. i feel like Tyler and Josh created all this hype around a concept record that they never made just to stay relevant. there are just WAY TOO MANY things from the Dema Universe that the album didn't explain or even attempted to adress. like, who the fuck is Clancy? what are the other eight bishops? what is Dema? what is Trench? who are these ‘banditos’? i feel like as an actual concept record, "Trench" could've been amazing, like “Danger Days...” by MCR amazing, but they didn't do it. they just didn't make a concept record, and i guess that's fine? i'm just angry and disappointed that they portraited it that way for so long when it clearly wasn't.
it also makes me feel like Tyler peaked in “Blurryface” and i’m not OK with that. that can’t be true.
~talk's a waste of time~
