i’ve been trying to listen to it for a second time for FOUR DAYS. i never get past “Neon Gravestones”. i’m trying right now. it’s just SO BORING!
ok, “Jumpsuit” starts strong, but now that i realized it has mostly nothing to do with Dema, i’m kinda not as excited as i was about it before. still one of my favorites from the album.
i still think “Levitate” is annoying.
but update on the Josh Dun solo matter: he has a bit of a moment at the end of “Morph”. verses are boring.
also, “My Blood” is more bass driven than i thought it was. still: too disco for me: i don’t like it (which DOESN’T mean i think it’s bad. i just don’t like it).
i still don’t understand all the excitement around “Chlorine”. like, everybody seems to be obsessed with it. to me, it sounds like an Imagine Dragons song. not that that’s a bad thing necessarily, but- the whole idea behind twenty øne piløts was that they didn’t sound like any other band. whatever *eyeroll*.
UGH. i hate “Smithereens”. i’m so sorry for Ty and Jenna. love ‘em. i mean, i love the sentiment of the song, but the song itself. it’s- UGH! it annoys me because we know he can do so much better than this.
i already said i think “Neon Gravestones” is the best song in the album. i still stand by that. not only because of lyrical content, but because it sounds exactly like a twenty øne piløts song: it doesn’t sound like anything else anyone’s ever done before. not even themselves. that’s brilliant. it just is.
and with “The Hype” we just go back to the boring and predictable 80/90’s pop we’ve been hearing all through most of the last eight songs. also, lyrics are like “fuck mainstream, just because our songs are being played on the radio doesn’t mean we less cool. clique where you at?” and it’s like… fuck off, Tyler, mainstream is what allows you tour the world, you disrespectful piece of shit! he probably just meant that fame’s not gonna change them as people and that’s actually kinda nice, but whatever! i’m angry (?).
“Nico And The Niners” is like “Neon Gravestones” music wise, like it doesn’t sound like anything we’ve heard before, not even twenty øne piløts. and that’s awesome! it also has to do with Dema for once, which is kinda off putting to be honest, since NONE of the other songs have anything to do with the Dema universe, but WHATEVER. i still like it. it’s probably my second favorite (after “Neon Gravestones”).
back to 80’s pop music with “Cut My Lip”. he kinda follows a reggae based rhythm, which i hadn’t picked up on the first time around listening and i actually i respect it. it’s a Tyler thing. he does that. i don’t generally like reggae all that much, but i never minded it when Tyler used it because he made it work nicely. i still don’t like the song though, too many 80’s synth, i don’t know if i’m listening to a twenty øne piløts song or i’m watching an episode of Stranger Things.
i like that he brought up an actual piano for “Bandito”. and that’s pretty much the only thing i like about it. like, it’s not that i hate it, but lyrics are too repetitive and it just seems like he came up woth the melody and had nothing to say. also, the song was doing good until the last chorus when he brought back up the 80/90’s synths. like, for once i thought: it’s refreshing to not hear those sounds so much, and then he did. fair enough.
people also LOVE “Pet Cheetah” and i don’t get why. like, that song is a joke. you can’t expect me listen to the line “i’ve got a pet cheetah down in my basement/ i’ve raised him and bathed him/and named him Jason Statham” and take you seriously. i’m sorry. i just can’t. maybe i’m missing something.
“Legend” again with the 80/90’s vibe. fucks sake. i respect this song because lyrics are personal and actually kinda nice. verses sound like a 90’s song chorus and i can’t pinpoint which one, i’ll get back to you on that one. also: only song with uke; gotta respect that.
“Leave The City” is clearly about Tyler doubting going on with music. and to be honest, after this album, i would’ve rather him not making it. “Blurryface” would’ve been such and epic downfall for tøp.
new overall thoughts: there is way too much falceto all through the album, like he barely sings in his chest or head voice. and he doesn’t belt at all, which he used to (mostly in “Vessel” though). still hate the fact that they sold it as a concept album and it isn’t. i still dislike most of the songs, like 75% at least. i still didn’t heat Josh’s show stopping moment. i don’t like the fact that there’s absolutely not ukelele at all.
finally, never forget that my opinion is probably gonna change in a few months- or maybe not. but just know that it might.
~talk's a waste of time~
