i’d love for him to address this issue the other way around: bands that stray from their usual writing into a more popular sounding music to expand their fanbase. i always thought that was so shitty and it shows.
because you can write away from whatever genre your fans or the critics boxed you in and still sound like the same band. if you stay true to yourself and write from your heart, your artistry will show. and if you do, your fans are gonna stick by you, because as much as they (we) could like a certain genre or whatever, they (me particularly) usually end up falling in love with the artist. so, as much as you change what type of music you make, if you stay true to yourself, it’s gonna show, and your fanbase is gonna love it. and who knows? maybe you’ll even gain some fans in the process.
