Born For This

CHAPTER I: CAPTURING THE DREAM (part 2).

-This is your work place. You’re gonna write here, record here; you can hang here as long as you want after work, sleep here-
-Can we eat here? – Alicia asked right away, making her way in.
The woman jiggled in response.
-Alice! – her band reprehended her.
-Get comfortable as I go get the guys so you can meet them – the woman said as they all entered the recording studio.
They were stocked by the fact of just being able to stand there, but Alyson, Alyson was amazed. She truly couldn’t believe her dream was finally becoming reality after everyone except her band told her that would never come true.
Alyson was one optimistic gal, and therefore she would never in a lifetime let her dreams take wings without her. She was the one who put the band together, she was the one who convinced Julian that the dream of a succesful band was more than possible. But there was one thing she was not responsible for: and that was the initiator of her dream. Alyson’s dream wasn’t always to become famous. Once she dreamed of being a writer, a novel writer, until her father came into the picture. Alyson’s father was a musician, a well known guitarrist who travelled the world several times in his youth. And when she was rejected from his knowledge as a guitar player, music became her obsession.
-Toquemos algo… - Sofía suggested sitting on the drums stool.
-¿“The World Isn’t Big Enough”? – Alicia asked in her rough english.
-Let’s go with that one – Julian said sitting in front of the most beautiful Baldwin he’d ever seen, still with his headphones round his neck.
They started the song a few minutes later, when Alicia, the boy, and even Alyson, got plugged in. The microphones were already plugged and working, but they had to stop a few times so Julian could arrange the volumes. Besides those little inconvenients, everything went very well, and the band was playing more than happily when the woman came back to the recording studio.
As they were playing, or so did Alyson notice, the woman stood down the door-frame along with another grown man and a bunch of kids, probably her age.
-Well that was simply amazing! – the woman said clapping really loud. – I want to introduce you to the guys that will be singing your songs… - she announced.
The for kids formed in a line, like a trained army.
-Jackson, Charles, Shane, and Justin – she said from left to right – We still missing the fifth member… - the woman added toughtfully.
-Why do you need a fifth member? Historicaly boy bands always remain as four. – Alyson said without thinking about it too much. It never crossed her mind that maybe that wasn’t hers to say until Julian pinched her with his elbow.
-You’re probably right – the woman said without taking her eyes off the boys.
They all remained in silence.
-Hello - said the grown man after a while – My name is Richard Armstrong, and I am the record company producer – he introduced himself. – You already met my lovely sister, though I bet she never told you her name, did she? – he waited for the band to shake their heads in response. – Her name is Lindsay Armstrong, and she is what I like to call: the music tech. Basically: she takes care of everything that has to do with directing, sounds, having everything on time, and those kind of stuff – he looked at the woman with admiration. – Any question? – he finished looking back at them.
-No – they said in unison.
-Alright! – Lindsay exclaimed – These guys are going to become your new family, so… get to know each other very well – she was starting to leave but she stopped herself and turned around. – Sorry… your names are…?
-Oh! – Julian said rapidly – Julian – he said pointing at himself – Alice, Sophie, Alyson, and Freddie – he added pointing at each of his band members.
Lindsay modulated each name pointing its owner before she left the studio, Richard following her steps.
-So… - one of the guys said. Justin, as Alyson could remember.
-Why a boy band? – Sophie asked from behind her drums, playing with her drumsticks.
-Boy bands are cool! – the guy next to Justin said.
-No they’re not, Shane! – his friends told him.
-At least not for now –
-Sorry, your name was…? – Sophie asked the boy that talked last.
Sofía was never good at remembering names, but she was the best at remebering faces. And those boys were quite unique for her. Specially Shane.
-Charles – he said smiling widely.
-I’ve only one question to ask – Freddie spoke for the first time in a while – How did you guys end up here?
-We auditioned – Shane answered like it was an obvious thing to notice.
The band looked at each other with a meaningful glance. They were all thinking the same thing: “this is not going to work”. Soon they’d realise they were wrong.
